Backing is one of the most common methods of post-printing processing which has a wide range of using – from the manufacture of packaging to the advertising products, books, notebooks manufacture.

The technology is based on the fact that a less tight material is glued or pressed onto a tight base (after post-printing processes – lamination, varnishing, stamping, etc.) which is called a liner. It is remarkable that a liner can be of completely different types. For example, thin cardboard, paper for backing or even film is often used for this reason. This allows you to create presentable products with better printing quality.

Backed packaging: advantages and features

Due to the backing of a packaging being additionally protected from moisture (because of post-pressing) it becomes more attractive. Therefore, for example, ordinary corrugated cardboard cannot be used for lining a sufficiently high-quality image needed for creating a conceived design. And it is the backing of a cardboard that allows to make a full-color product. In addition, liner is used for hiding the gluing points of boxes and cardboard cuttings making a packaging homogeneous. This process also increases a term using a product, protecting it against chafing and delamination.

Backing process

Corrugated, micro-corrugated and binding cardboards are often used for backing. For example, corrugated cardboard backing is used for creating packaging for goods requiring additional protection but also a beautiful presentation. In this case, less tight cardboard is glued or pressed onto the corrugated cardboard which already has an image, stamping, lamination, etc.

In the packaging and printing industries there is also used so-called slim-backing, which allows you to create high-quality products at affordable prices. Meaning of this method is in gluing two or more cardboard sheets of the same tightness. In this case the material becomes thicker but it’s hard to notice gluing of the sheets together.

While backing it is important to properly prepare all materials and bring them in the equipment – firstly the base, then the liner.
In order to make a process neat the glue must be supplied in some dosage. And only after that a material should be pressed.

Backed cardboard is used for packaging numerous products: cosmetics, household chemicals, gifts, food, etc. Depending on the chosen base a packaging may be used both for things requiring increased protection and for ordinary products. At the same time, backing is an appropriate way for making packaging eye-catching, bright and original.
